# Can you bookmark a PDF on a phone? — DocFind

**Sometimes. Of the phone apps we checked, Adobe Acrobat is the only one whose help describes bookmarking a page in a PDF, and Adobe says that works in the Android app only. Apple Books and Google Play Books both have bookmarks, but their help pages describe them for books, not for PDFs. Preview, Files by Google and Chrome's PDF viewer offer other ways back to a page instead.**

| App | Bookmarks, per the maker's help | Other documented way back to a page |
|---|---|---|
| Acrobat on Android | Yes: More options, Add bookmark | Table of contents, for some documents |
| Acrobat on iPhone | Shows bookmarks made in Acrobat on a computer | Not covered on that page |
| Apple Books | Steps written for a book | Books saves your place in a book when you close it |
| Google Play Books | Steps written for an ebook | Not covered on that page |
| Preview (iPhone) | Not mentioned | Go to Page; page thumbnails |
| Files by Google, Chrome (Android) | Not mentioned | Find in file, Find in page |

## Acrobat on Android: a bookmark per page
Adobe's page is the clearest of the set: "Bookmarks help you return to specific pages in a document", with one limit, "Only one bookmark is allowed per page." To add one, "Open the PDF and navigate to the page you want to bookmark", then choose More options and Add bookmark. Adobe's note on platforms matters for iPhone owners: "Bookmarks are currently available only in Acrobat on Android", and "Bookmarks created on Acrobat desktop are also visible in Acrobat on iOS" ([*Bookmark pages in Acrobat on Android*, Adobe Acrobat Help](https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/mobile/view-manage-files/bookmark-page.html), read 8 October 2026). So on an iPhone, Acrobat can show bookmarks, but by that page's account they have to be made on a computer.

## Apple Books: bookmarks, described for books
Apple's guide to Books has a "Bookmark a page" section: open the book, tap the page, tap the button at the bottom, then tap to add a bookmark, and later find them all under Bookmarks & Highlights. It also says you may not need one: "When you close a book, your place is saved automatically—you don’t need to add a bookmark—but you can add bookmarks to pages you want to return to again" ([*Read books in the Books app on iPhone*, iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/read-books-iphc1af7c57/ios), read 8 October 2026). Every step there talks about a book. Apple's separate page for PDFs in Books covers opening, sharing, printing and marking them up, and does not mention bookmarks ([*Read PDF documents in the Books app on iPhone*, iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/read-pdfs-iphab2193d5/ios), read 8 October 2026). Whether the bookmark button appears for your PDF is therefore something to check on one file. If the PDF is not in Books yet, [adding a PDF to Apple Books](https://docfindapp.com/answers/add-pdf-to-apple-books-library) covers that first.

## Google Play Books: the same gap
Google's instruction for Play Books on Android is short: "To add a bookmark, tap the top right of the page", and tap it again to remove it. Bookmarks can also be saved to Google Drive, under Play Books Settings, "Save notes, highlights, and bookmarks" ([*Add bookmarks, notes & highlights in an ebook*, Google Play Help](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/3165868?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 8 October 2026). That page is titled for ebooks and talks about books in Flowing text mode; it says nothing about PDFs you upload yourself. Play Books does accept uploaded PDFs, as [our Play Books page](https://docfindapp.com/answers/can-google-play-books-read-pdf) explains, but the bookmark behaviour for them is not documented on the page we read.

## Preview, Files by Google and Chrome: other routes back to a page
Apple's Preview page lists what you can do in an open PDF, and a bookmark is not among them. The nearest tools are page numbers and thumbnails: to reach a page you tap the More button, "then tap Go to Page. Enter a page number, then tap Go", and "Show thumbnails for a PDF: Tap the page count" ([*Open and view PDFs and images in Preview on iPhone*, iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/open-and-view-pdfs-and-images-iph7a0cdad0c/ios), read 8 October 2026).

Google's page for PDFs in Files by Google lists Share, Star ("To mark a PDF as favorite, tap Star"), Open with, Move, Copy, File info, Print and "Find in file: Search for specific text in the PDF". A star marks the whole file, not a page, and the page does not mention bookmarks ([*Open, manage & edit PDFs in Files by Google*, Files by Google Help](https://support.google.com/files/answer/15949407?hl=en), read 8 October 2026). Chrome on Android opens PDFs itself, and its PDF page covers scrolling, zooming, selecting text, Find in page, editing and downloading, with no bookmark step ([*Manage PDFs in Chrome* (Android), Google Chrome Help](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/16215622?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 8 October 2026). Chrome's ordinary bookmarks exist so "Chrome can remember your favorite and frequently visited websites" ([*Create, find and edit bookmarks in Chrome* (Android), Google Chrome Help](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/188842?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 8 October 2026); neither page says whether bookmarking a PDF's web address brings you back to a particular page in it.

## When there is no bookmark: what we do instead
These are our habits, not vendor instructions. Write the page number into the file name when you will come back to one place, such as `lease - p14 break clause.pdf`; it survives every app change. Highlight the line itself, which most of these apps can do ([how, app by app](https://docfindapp.com/answers/highlight-a-pdf)), so it stands out when you scroll past. And if what you really remember is a phrase rather than a page, skip the bookmark and [search the PDF for it](https://docfindapp.com/answers/search-for-a-word-in-a-pdf): a search finds the line on any page, including ones you never thought to mark.
