Where is a downloaded PDF on a Samsung phone?

Open the My Files app (Samsung puts it in the folder named Samsung) and tap Downloads under Categories. A PDF saved from Samsung Internet or another browser should be listed there, and the search icon at the top finds it by name. If it is not there, the app that fetched it may have kept it to itself, which Samsung's own pages warn about; the last section covers those cases.
In My Files, step by step
Samsung Canada's guide gives the route in five steps: open My Files, "Select Downloads", "Tap the Search icon at the top of the screen", "Type the file name in the search field", and tap the result. It sums up the rule as "Downloads are stored in the Downloads category, and you can also use the Search feature if you know the file name" (Manage and organize files saved on your Samsung Galaxy device, Samsung Canada, read 8 October 2026).
Samsung Ireland's page adds two things worth knowing. My Files lives in the Samsung folder by default, and if you cannot see it you can search your apps for "My Files". Its search is also more than a name box: you can "tap Type to see all files of that type, or Time to see files saved yesterday, in the past 7 days or in the past 30 days" (Where can I find downloaded files on my Samsung Galaxy smartphone?, Samsung Ireland, read 8 October 2026). When you know roughly when you downloaded the PDF but not what it was called, filtering by time is the quicker route.
Straight after the download
For Samsung Internet, the Canada guide's last two steps are the fastest way back to a file you just fetched: "Swipe downward from the top left corner of the screen to open the Notification panel", then "When it is complete, tap the notification to open the file." The same page says that once a download finishes, "the file will be saved on your device and can be found in the My Files app", though it names no folder path beyond the Downloads category (the Manage and organize files page above).
If you use Chrome on the Galaxy instead, Google's help says "The file will be saved in your default download location", and Chrome keeps its own list under More, then Downloads (Download a file (Android), Google Chrome Help, read 8 October 2026). Google's page tells you to "open the Files app" to see everything you downloaded, and it does not say which app that means on a Samsung phone; on a Galaxy, My Files is the one Samsung documents.
When it is not in Downloads
- The app kept it. Samsung Ireland says "Some apps, such as Netflix, store their downloads securely on your phone and are only available through the app itself" (the Ireland page above). Netflix is only Samsung's example; if another app showed you the PDF and it is missing from My Files, open that app and look for a save or share option.
- It went to an SD card. The same page notes that "if you have an SD card you can set your device to download files straight to the SD card"; check the SD card entry under storage locations in My Files.
- It came by WhatsApp or email. Those apps have their own places, covered in where WhatsApp documents are stored and where a downloaded PDF goes.
- Older phones. Samsung South Africa's page, last updated in 2021, gives an older route, My files, then Device storage, then Download, and says "On some devices, steps may vary" (Where Can I find downloaded files on my Samsung Galaxy smartphone?, Samsung South Africa, read 8 October 2026).
When you remember the contents, not the name
The search routes Samsung describes work from names, types and dates, and neither the Canada page nor the Ireland page above mentions searching the text inside a file. If the PDF was called doc_88123.pdf and what you remember is a reference number printed inside it, those filters will not reach it. Finding a document on your phone covers the options when the name is no help.
